A short guide to popular colours, varieties, and care tips.

Poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) are classic holiday plants admired for their bold bracts and festive colors. While the traditional scarlet-red variety remains the most popular, modern horticulture offers an array of colors and forms—each bringing a different mood to seasonal displays. Below are three commonly found types and what makes them special.

Red (Traditional): The deep red poinsettia is the iconic Christmas plant. Varieties like ‘Freedom’ and ‘Prestige’ showcase large, full bracts and a compact habit, making them excellent for table centerpieces and mantel displays.

White & Cream: White poinsettias (including creamy and ivory tones) offer an elegant, wintery look. Varieties such as ‘White Christmas’ and ‘Platinum Blonde’ pair beautifully with metallic ornaments or soft greenery for a sophisticated holiday palette.

Pink & Bicolors: Soft-pink and bicolored poinsettias provide a modern, festive twist. Selections like ‘Marblestar’ and ‘Christmas Feelings’ feature speckled or two-toned bracts that add visual interest and work well in contemporary décor.

Care tips: Place poinsettias where they receive bright, indirect light and keep them away from drafts and heat sources. Water when the topsoil feels dry to the touch—avoid overwatering. Moderate indoor temperatures (15–22°C / 60–72°F) help maintain bract color. With gentle care, poinsettias can brighten the holiday season for weeks.

Whether you prefer classic red or a subtle cream, choosing the right variety and giving it proper care will keep your poinsettia looking festive throughout the holidays.
